Shadows in the Elm takes the listener on a single movement journey up an Elm tree. The piece takes many twists and turns, while still staying true its original melody. The performer is asked to stomp, furthering symbolizing the wooden characteristics of the music. Featuring long melodic lines as well as faster rhythmic passages, this unaccompanied clarinet solo is great for intermediate to advanced players. This piece will keep the listener engaged from beginning to end, and be an enjoyable playing experience for the soloist. In March of 2015, this piece placed second in a solo works' competition hosted by Colorado State University
