Biography
Peter Hirschhorn (b.1994) graduated from Colorado State University in 2017 with degrees in Music Composition and Percussion Performance. He began learning piano when he was six, and began studying percussion when he was 11. Some of his most notable teachers include Fred Bowlus, Shilo Stroman, Dr. James David and Dr. Eric Hollenbeck. Peter currently resides in Denver, Colorado and performs regularly with his duo Occam's Rose and ska/punk band Then I Fly.
Peter has performed competitively with his high school marching band and winter percussion ensemble. He has competed at multiple Individual and Ensemble (I&E) competitions across Colorado. Peter has performed in various ensembles at CSU and has performed with the Blue Knights Percussion Ensemble in 2013 and 2015. He has also performed with Ascend Performing Arts in exhibition at the FIS World Ski Championships, marking the fourth time the competition has been held in the United States. As a composer, Peter has written for a number of different ensembles since his second year of high school. His music has been performed all across the state of Colorado. In addition, his arrangements have been performed by both high school ensembles and the CSU Marching Band. His piece, Shadows in the Elm, received second place at a solo works' composition competition hosted by CSU in March of 2015. Peter attended the Colorado Music Educators Association Conference in exhibition in 2016 and 2017 with Tuturu Music Publishing. Peter has been teaching private lessons since 2012. He has taught or is currently teaching lessons in marching percussion, concert percussion, drum set, composition, music theory, and piano. In addition to private lessons, he has given various clinics across Colorado, including with the Blue Knights Percussion Ensemble. Peter helped found the Northern Colorado Academy of Marching & Percussion (NOCO AMP). He spent three years as the percussion director for Windsor High School, and founded the Windsor High School Percussion Ensemble, which placed fourth in Scholastic A Class in its inaugural season. He also taught at Black Diamond Percussion in Colorado springs in 2018 and 2019. He was most recently the percussion director for Dakota Ridge High School and an instructor at Chaparral High School, and currently operates as a clinician/consultant.
